Gosh, I have fallen in love. Hard. And nobody is as surprised as me that the object of my affection is kelp.
It’s unusual for me to really adore a product range in its entirety, often there’s one “hero” in a launch and the rest is just filler, BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE HERE. Nope, the brand new Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium range from REN is pretty much everything I am after right now. I’ve managed to get my hands on four of the six products, but I’ve tried the other two at Space NK and can confirm that they are all dreamy, brilliant, wonderful and oh god just so RUDDY NICE.
I don’t know if this launch was just particularly good timing for my current situ; it’s marketed as energising, relaxing and detoxifying and I am of course tired, moody and tense, but when it comes to body treatments it really has been my favourite launch in ages.
The idea behind the collection is one of “renewable energy” – each product is packed full of magnesium and anti-oxidants to help revitalise and re-energise the skin. The benefits of sea kelp & seaweeds have been used in West Ireland for bathing, as well as a restorative food source, for centuries. REN has harnessed the power of this particular seaweed to fight fatigue, stress & pollution within a 21st century context. It might sound a bit airy fairy, but I’ve certainly found these products have made me feel relaxed, indulged and energised. Plus they smell fantastic and the scent alone is a boost in the shower to wake you up a bit.
As soon as I tried these products, I was transported back to the cliff-top open air spa experience I enjoyed at the Bedruthan hotel in Cornwall last year. I’ve never forgotten how invigorating it was to rub fresh salty seaweedy products into my skin and rinse off under buckets of ice water before warming up in front of the log fire. There was a real ritual to that sort of outdoors, completely natural, spa experience and I never thought I’d be able to try to emulate it at home in an urban city. I mean sure, buying the REN salt scrub isn’t going to suddenly transport you to the shores of the Atlantic, but it has transformed my showers into something much more revitalising.
There’s a body scrub, body cream, body wash, bath oil, hand cream and hand wash in the range, priced from £16 for the hand wash to £26 for the bath oil. I can’t quite decide if my favourite product is the Anti-Fatigue Body Cream or the Exfoliating Body Scrub. I really do love the Body Wash and Bath Oil too. If you were to try just one product though, I think I’d have to say the Exfoliating Body Scrub is the best bet. A little goes a long way and you scrub the magnesium salts into dry skin before washing off in the bath or shower. If you do opt for a bath, the salty scrub transforms into a silky bath oil (ACTUAL HEAVEN) but even in the shower the moisturising result as the scrub emulsifies is just blissful. It has made me genuinely excited for every shower, which at my current size/level of patience is no mean feat.
I do wish the Body Cream came in a larger bottle as I’m already racing through mine. For all the other products I’d say a little goes a long way and they’ll last ages, but for the cream I can’t help but slather it on and I know I’ll be replacing it sooner rather than later. I keep the cream on my bedside table and use it mostly on my arms, shoulders (if I can blag a massage of ST!), boobs and bump and my skin feels so much better than it had been feeling. It’s particularly nice to use before bed because the scent is, to me at least, incredibly relaxing.
If you’re passing Space NK then definitely go and have a play with these products, if you like them half as much as me then you won’t be disappointed! The reviews on the REN website seem to be unanimously 5 and 4 star at the moment so I’m certainly not the only one who has fallen for the collection.
Big up seaweed! I never knew I loved you.
