Yep, I was one of those awful people who asked anyone going to the USA to bring me back special toothpastes. But now there’s a cheap tooth whitening kit in the UK that WORKS!
I’m quite into teeth – not in a creepy way, mind – but in a ‘they’re right there in the middle of your face so you may as well look after them’ kinda way. I’ve even written in this column about the importance of flossing and my fave gadget to make flossing easy/quick and something you actually bother to do twice a day.
I remember when my childhood dentist came back from a cosmetic dentistry course in Hollywood and his teeth looked like bright white mirrors. They were MENTAL. And I wanted them, albeit in a slightly less Simon Cowell way.
I started looking out for the magical ‘Pearl Drops’ I’d read about in magazines and it became my mission to have teeth as white as snow. But where teeth whitening products were once a bit specialist, for pageant girls and Baywatch hunk wannabes, it’s become more and more normal for people to whiten them – so much so that nowadays it’s actually pretty darn difficult to find a toothpaste that doesn’t have a whitening agent. I only realised this when I was instructed by my orthodontist to only use toothpastes without whitening properties during the period I was in braces. They’re genuinely hard to find!
But whilst most of us have a whitening toothpaste in our bathrooms, we’re not all sipping coffee through straws, ditching the fags and pouring red wine down the sink. We want whiter teeth, but not to give up the things we love and spend all our pay checks on crazy sounding chemicals to put INSIDE OUR MOUTHS.
There are teeth whitening stations inside most shopping centres these days and the cosmetic dentistry market is scarily humungous, but most treatments that are more advanced than ‘whitening toothpaste’ come with a pretty hefty price tag.
Unfortunately, I had to go through the horrific punishment of adult train track braces fairly recently and after nearly two years in them, I was desperate to get my teeth as white as possible. But was I willing to pay thousands of pounds to do it? Hell no. Hundreds of pounds? Sorry, still no!
So it was with HUGE excitement that I saw an affordable hydrogen peroxide free whitening kit had landed on our shores a couple of weeks ago! It may have a silly name as if it should be in an app store – but the iWhite Instant kit is kind of amazing.
For just under £30 you get ten sets of pre-filled trays (no fiddling about with gels – score!) that you wear on your upper and lower teeth for 20 mins. They have clever flappy bits that you fold around your teeth to keep them in place and 20 minutes later you just chuck them away.
The kit claims to be able to lighten teeth by eight shades which sounds slightly dubious, but there’s a handy ‘shade guide’ that comes in the box so you can measure your transition to A-Lister accurately.
So what did I make of it? Continue reading on MSN to find out!
