Is Alpha-H Liquid Gold worth the hype?

August 5, 2015 By Poppy Dinsey 10 Comments

The short answer: Yes.

I guess you could just stop reading now, but for those who prefer a little more depth to their beauty claims, come sit with me a while…

Picture the scene, you’re on a beach in Portugal desperate to bore your mates back home with smug-tastic selfies but you can’t. Not because you’ve run out of data, oh no, but because you’re so spotty you can’t bear to. You’re well aware that there are far greater problems in the world, but that doesn’t do much to bolster your spirits when you have a forehead decorated with throbbing boils that seem to be developing their own personalities and interests. You consider growing a fringe and make peace with the fact that there will be little photographic evidence of this wonderful holiday.

A few days later you’re nursing a separate cluster of zitty friends in another airport, hungover, (what do you mean excessive alcohol consumption can cause hideous breakouts?!) and you remember the product that you’ve purposely never bought so that you can turn to it in a time of desperate need: Liquid Gold.

Ooooooh Liquid Gold, the magical potion that can’t possibly be as good as everyone says but loads of bloggers you actually know and trust swear by it so it must be worth thirty three of your English pounds. You buy it online. You get on another plane. Your skin gets progressively worse. You’re secretly pleased because it will be “a challenge” for the famous Liquid Gold (“great blog content, give it something to work for”). And you eventually end up in London with a surprisingly tiny bottle waiting on your doormat.

It’s small, but looks can be deceiving. This stuff is powerful. You realise as much when you sweep it across your face and neck and wake up with a sore and rashy ‘upper boob area’. Your face looks happy though, so you ignore your chest and continue applying to your face every other night, as directed.

Fast forward three months and you are utterly convinced that Liquid Gold is the greatest thing that has ever happened to your skincare routine.

PRAISE BE!

PoppyD no make-up Liquid GoldThere is nothing on my skin here except Liquid Gold. And obvs this hasn’t been filtered/edited in any way. (I’m also aware iPhone cameras aren’t the best, so sorry about that.)

No word of a lie, this stuff is great. SO GREAT.

I was very confused by what it would actually ‘be’, if that makes sense, but it’s a clear liquid that resembles any ol’ toner. Do not be confused by the fact it’s often referred to as a serum.

I look forward to Liquid Gold nights as it actually makes my routine easier, after double cleansing I sweep my Liquid Gold soaked cotton pad all over my face and I’m done. Finito! You can put moisturiser on top, but the effect is stronger if you don’t. Cleanse, Liquid Gold, lovely beautiful sleep = my kinda lazy routine.

Does it sting? It’s a bit of a tingle, but I like it. I don’t know why, but some days it tingles quite a lot and other days I feel like I’ve just put water on my face. I have no idea why that is, but what I love about it is that your skin doesn’t ‘get used to it’. It’s such an active product that it won’t stop working for you, your skin will supposedly continue to always respond to it.

The claim list of what it can do is long: revitalises dulled, ageing skin that’s lost its lustre, gradually lessens the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, blackheads, blemishes, pigmentation, scarring and redness. ETC ETC.

I saw results with this stuff pretty quickly, but I wanted to wait til I had used it for three months before making up my mind. Partly because I wanted to enjoy a few ‘hormonal episodes’ with it (my classic danger zone for jaw spots) and, lo and behold, my skin has never looked better. Even on my period. Even when I’ve been tired. Even when I’ve eaten too many crisps. *Naughty face*.

PoppyD Liquid Gold review PoppyD Liquid Gold review

My skin is more even, more radiant (lol), clearer than ever before and more youthful looking. I’ve been happy without make-up and thrilled with make-up.

Earlier I said I was surprised by how small the bottle is, but I’ve not finished the 100ml bottle yet (I’ve got more than a third left I think) and whilst I’ll probably look out for the 200ml bottle going forward, the 100ml size is great as it’s small and hand luggage-friendly.

If you’re one of the few remaining people in the world who hasn’t tried it yet, try it.

The bloggers and beauty editors aren’t lying. It really is that good.

Poppy, this made me laugh!! But you’re right, it IS amazing stuff. I’ve ran out so I’m debating buying the huge bottle (it’s on QVC at the mo’ so pretty good value).

Your skin looks incredible in these photos. I’m just hoping my memory is bad and really (really) I will get skin like that from just one use of the magical stuff 😉

Ah thank you!!!!! I think I’ll buy the two 100ml bottles from QVC next time, as they seem to be same price as the 200ml bottle but convenience of being travel friendly. Never shopped with QVC before though, I’m scared, hah! x

Thanks so much for this review! My skin is so awful these days that I’m constantly battling spots or the marks left by spots (or both) and am in need of a miracle. This sounds like it is *exactly* what I need.

    Hi,
I am also at the same place where you were before using liquid gold. It will be really helpful if you could tell me:

    1. How long have you been using this?
    2. How is your skin now? Any side effect

Thanks a lot. I feel hopeful after reading your blog

No side effects at all, I’ve never been able to use on my chest but no soreness or redness when on my face. I don’t use if on holiday/having a lot of sun exposure. I’ve used this product for a couple of years now and really do still rate it. If I ever stop using it I notice quite quickly and once I repurchase I can see the difference again. Hope that helps! X

Just bought my first bottle on the way home from a long haul business trip and 10 days before my annual beach holiday – so it will have some work to do …
Unlike you ladies I am 60, haven’t had any fillers or Botox and don’t deny myself the finer thing in life (though I do eat very healthily and am a neat uk size 8) so I’m not going to make it easy for the little magic bottle!
I’ll keep you all posted …

Can’t wait to see what happens ….
