Despite what you may think from looking at their comically 90s website…
…Tend Skin is one of the best beauty products I have ever discovered. And it’s a hit for men too! It’s supposed be a life-saver for razor burns and shaving bumps, especially for men with coarser facial hair. It started off as a men’s product entirely actually, but apparently wives and girlfriends would steal it to use on their post-waxing ingrowns and soon they too realised the power of the blue bottle.
I was sold it to prevent ingrown hairs the very first time I went to Strip and have never looked back. It is an amazing, fuss-free product that JUST WORKS.
Razor-burn and beard issues aside, if you wax, sugar, thread or epilate then ingrown hairs can be the devil. I found mine were even worse when I was having IPL. The hairs would often get stuck under the skin leaving them angry, inflamed and generally ugly. You don’t pay for smooth skin to just have the hair replaced by spots. That’s not to mention the fact that they can be really painful, especially if like me you’re tempted to pick at them ‘to release them’ and then oh look suddenly you’re bleeding down there.
The only time I ever get ingrowns now is when I forget to use Tend Skin. And if I do get one, I just put Tend Skin on it and it disappears. It is the most magical Ronseal-esque product there is when it comes to skincare.
My recommendation is purely for the roll-on product, because although the bottled Tend Skin is the exact same product, it’s fiddly to use with cotton wool pads and there’s inevitable wastage. The roll on is exactly like a deodorant roll-on, so you just apply it to dry skin in a couple of seconds. It’s near enough pure alcohol so it dries very quickly, you can do it and get dressed straight away.
I roll my Tend Skin over all my waxed areas twice a day for the first two weeks after waxing (starting from 24 hours after treatment), then I just use it as and when if I need it/as I remember.
It basically just dries out the skin so the trapped hairs can come out, but this does mean it’s drying your skin out too in the process. If you use it a lot you might find the dryness bothersome, but I just use moisturiser if it gets bad so never becomes a problem. I wouldn’t normally moisturise down there (!) or my underarms…despite what the Dove ads may tell me to do…but maybe you’d worry about the drying side more if you were rolling it all over your face.
I’ve gone through a few bottles now but it seems to last forever and it’s pretty good value. It’s a Florida based brand and their LOLsome website says to be wary of eBay and Amazon sellers, but FeelUnique sell it for just £12.95. You can buy it in loads of salons too though.
I’ve tried loads of other ingrown products, not because I’ve wanted to look elsewhere but because PRs have sent them or I’ve received them in goodie bags, and NOTHING has ever come close to this. Prevent ingrowns ever appearing or treat them quickly if you forget to prevent them, simple.
An embarrassing testimony to its strength? ST fell on an urchin in Mauritius back in October and although the emergency doc managed to get 10 or so barbs out of his thigh, two were too deep to get out. Fast forward to JANUARY and the fact the barbs were STILL THERE (!!!!) I decided to make him put the Tend Skin on twice a day to see if would help bring the barbs to the surface. Lo-and-behold, it worked. My husband is no longer part Mauritian sea urchin.
If you ever have irritation, lumps and bumps or gaggy ingrowns after hair removal then trust me, YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE.
And that brings Body Hair Week to a close 🙂 Hope you’ve liked it! You can catch up on all the other hairy posts here.
